Combat climate change? Build with nature!
Building with Nature: what and why?
Building with Nature is a project under the Interreg VB North Sea Region programme. The project aims to better protect the North Sea Region in the future against the effects of climate change. It incorporates natural forces and elements, such as wind and currents, into the design of hydraulic development projects. The focus is on building with nature instead of building to constrain nature. The Flemish Environment Agency is carrying out a design study for the development of a number of innovative design concepts. In Lichtaart, for example, we are looking for an innovative solution to combine the waterway function of the Kleine Nete with a recreational function.
Purpose of Building with Nature
The purpose of Building with Nature is to better arm coastal areas and river basins in the North Sea Region against the adverse effects of climate changes. Building with Nature implements specific modifications in coastal regions of seven different countries along the North Sea. This will reduce the risk of flooding and coastal erosion throughout the North Sea Region.
Building with Nature in Europe
The project has been set up under the Interreg North Sea Region programme. This is a transnational programme aimed at supporting, developing and promoting sustainable economic growth in the participating countries in the North Sea Region. Cross-border cooperation is essential because climate change does not stop at national borders.
