Climate adaptation central to LIFE Flandica project
Flandica: what and why?
Climate change is the greatest global challenge facing people and society. VMM is monitoring its impact in several areas in Flanders and has noted several trends:
- The average annual temperature rose by 2.5 °C in Flanders.
- Winters are getting wetter.
- Sea levels are rising and seawater is getting warmer.
If these trends continue, natural phenomena such as bone-dry summers and winter floods will become the standard.
To deal with these changing conditions, we must make our surroundings more climate resilient. Today, the expertise in climate-adaptive measures is very widespread, both in the different areas of the Flemish government and in the private sector.
Flandica: purpose?
This project brings together a number of stakeholders who shape our surroundings. They share their needs and objectives for climate adaptation. This knowledge will set out the lines for the SIP proposal, which will hopefully be developed into a subsequent LIFE project. In the next phase – if approved – it would lead to a structural partner network.
Flandica in Europe
LIFE Flandica is being carried out by VMM, commissioned by the European Commission, under the LIFE programme.
The project will run from 1 April 2022 to 31 August 2023.
